Ben Searle - Spatial Specialist

Ben Searle Spatial Specialist

Education:  Bachelor of Science in Geography

I graduated from Canterbury University with a Bachelors Degree in Geography and have spent the last 30+ years working in a range of operational and strategic roles across a broad number of domains.  My experiences cover leadership roles in data management activities in global marine science and meteorological programs; land administration roles, mapping and spatial and business system development and project management.  Recent roles have covered providing the direction for establishing a Statistical Spatial Framework at agency, Federal Government, national and international levels.  I am currently looking for a new challenge where my strategic skills and technical knowledge can be applied to providing innovative solutions for government or the private sector.

My broad ranging experiences have given me skills to recognise common patterns in business activities and provides an insight into how a location element can provide added value to many business activities.  I have developed a number of innovative concepts and have operationalized many of these.  For example: the development in the late 1980’s of a world first four dimensional information management system to support complex oceanographic data; establishing an international program to develop MarineXML; establishing online service delivery capabilities including spatial components and linking these to web service enabled business applications and integrated with document management systems: establishing a framework to provide a common approach to spatially enabling statistical and administrative data.

I have worked in many operational roles such as providing products to inform naval operations of environmental conditions relevant to their mission.  At a strategic level, I have developed national environmental data management policies; data management plans for global ocean and atmospheric programs and influenced to direction of numerous national and international marine and land related program.

I have had direct responsibilities for major ICT development programs covering sourcing funding, specification and tender development, tender evaluation and project oversight.

My skills, developed over many years in a number of different working environments, enable me to recognise issues, blockages and find resolutions to these to provide successful results.  I am able to bridge the communication gap between the language and understanding used by senior business mangers and the technical community within spatial and ICT fields.  Being able to ‘translate’ between these communities has resulted in both understanding the requirements and deliverables.  Expectation management is a key to this and recognising the approaches of both management and technical domains has been a key to my success.

I am seeking a opportunities in the private or government sectors where my experience and knowledge can be leveraged to create innovative and effective capabilities.  My passion is to apply a location context to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of business activities and am seeking roles where my knowledge can be applied.

I am happy to discuss any opportunities and also to provide a resume.
